DANCING:

Dancing, a form of amusement or exercise in which or more persons makes a series of more or less graceful movements with measured steps in accord to music. In its earliest forms dancing is a mode of outward expression of strong emotions such as joy or sorrow and even for the expression of the most solemn religious feelings; in more modern societies, dancing is generally an amusement with no high signification whatsovever, though certain types of highly formalized dancing such as ballet can be considered an art form.

In primitive society dancing was often part of imitative acting. Aristotle ranked dancing with poetry. The dancing master in Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme asserts that the destinies of nations depend on the science of dancing. The Sparans practiced dancing as a gymnastic exercise and made learning to dance compulsory for all children. The Roman Cicero however stated, No one dances sober unless he chances to be mad. And indeed most Romans considered it disgraceful for a citizen to dance, but willingly enough witnessed the perofmances of dances by slaves and noncitizens.

The early Christians practiced choral dances but these fell into disrepute. St Augustine said: "It is better to dig than to dance."

There are many so called national dances, which preserve ethnic traditions. These dances include: the Spanish , bolero and Fandango, the Scottish Reel, the Irish Jig and the Polish and Ukranian Polka.

In modern times, dancing has becom less formalized and easier to learn. If you want to learn to dance or improve your dance or learn a new dance step, you have come to the right place to learn to dance. Go to our main site by typing learntodance.xs5.com in your address bar.
